At Specialist Door Solutions (SDS), we're proud to work alongside many NHS Trusts to support the expansion and redevelopment of critical healthcare facilities.
One impactful collaboration in 2025 has been with Luton & Dunstable University Hospital and Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, helping them meet growing patient demands while delivering compliance with stringent NHS and fire-safety requirements.
Healthcare estates across the UK are under increasing pressure to expand capacity, modernise clinical spaces and ensure buildings not only meet operational needs, but also adhere to rigorous regulations. Our work at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital demonstrates how tailored doorset solutions contribute to both future-ready healthcare environments and critical safety standards.
Transforming a new clinical facility.
One of the standout projects in our partnership was supplying over 650 high-specification doorsets for the new clinical facility at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital. This major redevelopment formed part of a strategic plan to expand clinical capacity and enhance patient care delivery across key services, such as maternity, neonatal care, surgical suites and critical care.
SDS delivered a comprehensive portfolio of healthcare doorsets, including Dfendoor, Shieldoor and Lamdoor, that combined robust performance with long-lasting durability and design consistency. These doorsets were carefully specified to support rigorous clinical activities while meeting NHS compliance standards and high-traffic loads.
Our team collaborated closely on finishes, vision panels and ironmongery to ensure the doors not only performed technically, but also contributed to a modern, user-friendly hospital environment. The result is a facility that supports efficient patient flow, enhances infection control and strengthens safety outcomes for staff and patients.

Supporting the Emergency Department expansion.
Another pivotal project in our collaboration was the £35m refurbishment and expansion of the Emergency Department (ED) at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital. This case study highlights SDS's ability to deliver compliant and durable doorset solutions within a live clinical environment.
Our involvement focused on specifying and supplying Dfendoor doorsets tailored to the unique challenges of high-traffic ED spaces. Project requirements included careful logistical planning to minimise disruption to vital emergency and critical care services while still delivering a compliant, robust doorset solution.
Feedback from project partners emphasised the quality and reliability of SDS doorsets, noting that their durability and performance were essential in meeting the operational needs of a busy emergency care facility.
