Why Effective Clear Width matters on Disabled Access Day.

On Disabled Access Day, it’s important to recognise the role that thoughtful design plays in creating truly accessible spaces.

Disabled Access Day, organised every two years by the charity Euan’s Guide, aims to raise awareness of accessibility, highlight inclusive venues, and encourage meaningful conversations between businesses and disabled visitors.

One key factor is Effective Clear Width, a critical element in ensuring buildings can be used safely and independently by everyone.

According to Building Regulations Approved Document Part M (BS 8300-2:2018), “doors to the principal, or alternative accessible, entrance should be accessible to all, particularly wheelchair users and people with limited physical dexterity.”

Getting the clear opening width right is essential for meeting these standards and supporting inclusive design. It’s not just about compliance—it’s about enabling ease of movement and equal access for all building users.

To support this, Specialist Door Solutions has developed a clear width calculator, designed to help architects, contractors, and estates teams quickly assess door openings against accessibility requirements.
