SDS on Track to Reduce GHG Emissions by 50% by 2025
Specialist Door Solutions (SDS) has made significant strides in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, achieving a remarkable 13.9% reduction in the 2022-2023 reporting period compared to the previous year. This accomplishment is part of a broader commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with the NHS Evergreen Supply Chain initiative, which emphasises the importance of sustainable suppliers.
Sustainability Progress at Specialist Door Solutions
According to a 2022/2023 CarbonNeutral® Company GHG Assessment Report conducted by Nature Positive, SDS is on track to achieve a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2025.
The report highlighted several key areas where SDS has made notable improvements:
1. Reduction in Overall Emissions
SDS reported a total of 382.4 tCO2e emissions for the 2022-2023 period, down from 444.0 tCO2e in the previous year. This reduction includes significant decreases in emissions from heating oil, electricity, and staff commuting.
2. Impact of Refrigerant Gases
The inclusion of refrigerant gases in the 2022 assessment, which accounted for approximately 16% of the total emissions, shows that the actual reduction in other areas is more substantial than the 13.9% figure suggests.
3. Switch to Zero Carbon Electricity
The shift to zero-carbon electricity in February 2024 has further contributed to reducing emissions. This transition accounts for 37% of the 2023 total emissions, so its impact will be evident in future assessments.
Alex Motley, who leads the environmental initiatives at SDS, expressed his satisfaction with the progress made:
"We are proud of the steps we have taken to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering, and we are on track to meet our ambitious target of a 50% reduction by 2025. This achievement is a testament to our dedication and the hard work of our entire team."
The report also outlines several recommendations for improving data collection and further reducing emissions. These include recording more detailed data on heating oil consumption, fuel use for company-owned vehicles, and expanding the scope of emissions reporting.
Alignment with NHS Evergreen Supply Chain Matrix
SDS’s efforts align with the NHS Evergreen Supply Chain matrix, a procurement initiative that prioritises sustainability among suppliers. By reducing its carbon footprint and adhering to the guidelines outlined in the initiative, SDS is positioning itself as a leader in environmental progress within the industry.
Conclusion and Looking To The Future
SDS’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact is evident in the significant strides made over the past year. With a clear roadmap and continued dedication, SDS is well on its way to achieving its goal of a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by 2025, setting a strong example for the industry and contributing positively to global sustainability efforts.
Moving forward, SDS plans to continue investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar power and heat pumps, and exploring innovative solutions like the Clariglide product developments to further enhance its sustainability efforts.
