What is Fire Testing?

Following on from the tragic events of the Grenfell Fire in 2017; the Grenfell Tower Inquiry shed light on a number of recommendations to help improve standards in fire safety and technology.

In our response to the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety; Specialist Door Solutions welcome the widening of the framework, mentioned in the report, to include further residential buildings such as Hospitals.

SDS take fire safety extremely seriously, and as a manufacturer of fire doors for public environments such as hospitals, it is incredibly important for us to understand and maintain high standards in the production of our bespoke doors.

Therefore, SDS carry out a number of Fire Testing procedures to make sure the doors that we produce meet the highest standards of fire safety.

The Fire Testing Process

Fire testing generally takes place using a large furnace with temperatures reaching 200 degrees in the first few minutes and can burn door sets at up to 800 degrees. Vision panels tend to crack and inevitably the doors begin to burn and deteriorate. The nervous anticipation of waiting as months of hard work is subjected to a sixty minutes of fire destruction can be tense, but it’s the confidence and peace-of-mind that results from the hard work that makes it worthwhile for both SDS and our valued clients.
