Fire doors – making the right decision

The Importance of Primary Test Evidence in Specifying Fire Doorsets for Healthcare Environments

When designing fire-safe environments, especially in healthcare settings, understanding the significance of primary test evidence in specifying fire doorsets is essential.

For a fire door to meet compliance standards, every component—from the door leaf and glazing to the frame, ironmongery, fixings, fire-stopping materials, intumescent products, and fire signage—must not only be compatible but also backed by solid fire test evidence demonstrating their effectiveness when integrated.

Manufacturers typically offer fire certification through two methods: Primary Test Evidence and Global Assessments.

Primary test evidence involves subjecting the complete doorset to rigorous real-life fire tests under controlled conditions. This testing provides clients with the assurance that the doorsets will perform as required during a fire.

Global Assessments rely on separate test reports for individual components. While convenient, this leaves room for misinterpretation and may not adequately ensure fire safety, particularly for PVC doors where rapid degradation occurs during fires.

Following the updated Fire Safety Regulations in 2022, there is a growing awareness when specifying fire-certified doorsets correctly.

At SDS, fire certification remains a top priority. Our doorsets undergo rigorous testing and independent evaluation, ensuring adherence to the highest standards and compliance. This commitment provides specifiers with the confidence that SDS doorsets maintain their integrity and reliability over time.
